Divan 7. Anne Waldman. Become a Midnight Star

With Juan Codorníu (Lagartija Nick) and Banin Fraile (Los Planetas and Los Pilotos).

Presented by Öykü Tekten

ANNE WALDMAN is a poet, professor and feminist, social and cultural activist. Her path as a poet started back in 1970 and still endures nowadays: some of her poems have been recently translated into Spanish in a bilingual anthology titled Become a Midnight Star (Para ser estrella a medianoche, Arrebato Libros, 2022). Recognised with the American Book Award and the Shelley Memorial Award of the Poetry Society of America, Waldman has always had a vanguardist perspective and, therefore, has collaborated with many of the most important artists during the second half of the 20th century. Her work has been translated into multiple languages, she has also presented it in many different conferences and festivals across the whole world, and has been praised by artists such as Patti Smith, who defined her poetry as a psychic shield for our times. Waldman is, besides, one of the founders of the Poetry Project at St. Mark's Church In-the-Bowery, and in 1974 founded Jack Kerouac School in the University of Naropa, alongside Allen Ginsberg and Diana di Prima, where she still works during the summer program.

JUAN CODORNÍU is a spanish guitarist, best known for his work with Lagartija Nick, band with which he has published several albums since the 1990s, including the revolutionary and celebrated «Omega» with Enrique Morente. He has joined different musical projects, such as the Poet Tour, directed by Waldman in past visits to Spain. Parallel with his music, he has also developed academic activities as a member of the Instituto de la Paz y los Conflictos of the University of Granada.

BANIN FRAILE is a keyboardist and guitarist in Los Planetas since 1998, being the first album in which he participated the acclaimed «Una semana en el motor de un autobús». In 2010, he created Los Pilotos, band with which he has already published three LPs and an EP. In his last album, «Alianza Atlántica», he was joined by some of the most relevant and influential latin american artists like Javiera Mena, Instituto mexicano del sonido, Mula or Pedrina. As a producer, he has worked in «Cuatricomia», one of the latest Fangoria's albums, «Vacaciones», by Colectivo Dasilva, or «Geminis», by Aurora. He has made remixes too for La bien querida, Kid Simius and The suicide of western culture.
